Homes that merge into the landscape

One of the main criterion in the design of new homes is for them to blend into the surrounding landscape. Their living spaces must be large, spacious ones with a sense of depth and plenty of natural light during the day, able to illuminate all their rooms.
When these projects are set in natural surroundings, this is even more important, since architects seek to echo the outer landscape inside the home’s interiors. Whether the home looks out toward the coast, across immense stretches of sea, toward a remote mountain or even the city that never sleeps, this fusion must be carefully and simply accomplished.
A sensation of infinity and close connection between the home and its surroundings can be achieved by using big sliding windows that run from ceiling to floor or by using timeless pale colours on walls. Gentle-coloured surfaces, with organic designs evocative of natural materials, are one key strategy in creating this connection.
One brilliant way of linking a home in with the surrounding landscape, whatever the project, is to use a mix of natural elements or materials, such as wood or water.
The photographs shown below are of ‘Casa Cami’, a Tenerife home designed by Puerta 35 studio, using Petra and Storm. This project is a perfect illustration of this connection between a home and its backdrop.
The main idea behind the project was to create a day area with more spacious, luminous living spaces and a multipurpose space on the top floor with views of the city.
The first level was designed in the form of a luminous space with views of all its different living areas.
On the second level however, the living spaces are all outward facing with views of the coast. To integrate this part of the house into its surroundings, outdoor decking was used, together with a small pool whose water merges with the sea.
